The Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon, are a stunning and mysterious mountain range located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They’re not volcanic like Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya but are instead formed by uplifted rock, making them geologically unique.
Highlights and activities
- Highest peak: Margherita Peak (5,109 meters / 16,763 feet) on Mount Stanley — the third highest peak in Africa.
- UNESCO World Heritage Site: Rwenzori Mountains National Park is listed for its incredible biodiversity and natural beauty.
- Glaciers in the tropics: Despite being near the equator, the Rwenzori are home to permanent glaciers (though sadly shrinking due to climate change).
- Rich biodiversity: Think rare plants like giant lobelias and groundsels, and animals like forest elephants, Rwenzori turacos, and endemic chameleons. Called the “Mountains of the Moon” by ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy, who believed they were the source of the Nile.
- Home to the Bakonzo and Amba peoples, who have a rich cultural and spiritual connection to the mountains.
- Trekking & Adventure
- The Central Circuit Trail offers a 7–9-day hike through mystical cloud forests, alpine meadows, and snow-capped peaks.
It’s challenging due to steep terrain and boggy trails, but the scenery is unmatched.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Mount Elgon National Park is during the dry seasons, from December to February and June to August. These months offer more favourable hiking conditions, though the park is open year-round.
