Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savanna national park, is a hidden gem located approximately 230 kilometers (about 3.5–4 hours) west of Kampala, nestled between Masaka and Mbarara towns. Despite its compact size, the park boasts a rich tapestry of landscape.
Lake Mburo
The park’s namesake, Lake Mburo, is a haven for both wildlife and birdlife. Visitors can embark on boat cruises to observe hippos, crocodiles, and a myriad of bird species, including pelicans, herons, and the rare African finfoot. The lake’s shores are frequented by buffalo, antelopes, and other animals, especially during the dry season.
Rubanga Forest
Situated on the western side of Lake Mburo, Rubanga Forest offers a serene escape into tropical high forest. With a closed canopy and a viewing platform, it provides excellent bird-watching opportunities. Common species include the Narina Trogon, Grey-backed Camaroptera, and Double-toothed Barbet.
Game Viewing
Lake Mburo National Park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including zebras, impalas, giraffes, elands, topis, buffaloes, and bushbucks. The park is also one of the few places in Uganda where you can spot the elusive leopard, especially during night game drives. Apes, wildlife, and cultural experiences make it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts.
Birdwatching
With over 350 recorded bird species, Lake Mburo is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Notable species include the Yellow-breasted Apalis, Long-tailed Cisticola, Grey Crowned Crane, and the Papyrus Gonolek. Birdwatching can be done during early mornings or evenings with an experienced guide.
Boat Cruises
Boat cruises on Lake Mburo offer a unique perspective of the park’s aquatic life. Departing at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM, these cruises provide opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species along the shores.
Sport Fishing
For fishing enthusiasts, Lake Mburo offers sport fishing opportunities, particularly in the Mazinga area. Common catches include tilapia, lungfish, catfish, and barbell. A fishing permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority is required.
Horseback Riding
Lake Mburo is the only national park in Uganda offering horseback safaris. Operated by Mihingo Lodge, this activity allows visitors to explore the savannah plains on horseback, providing close encounters with wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, and buffalo.
Nature Walks
Guided nature walks offer an immersive experience of the park’s ecosystems. Accompanied by armed rangers, visitors can explore trails in Rubanga Forest or near Rwonyo Rest Camp, observing wildlife and learning about the park’s flora and fauna.
Cultural Experiences
Engage with the local communities, such as the Bahima and Banyankole, to experience traditional dances, cattle milking, ghee making, and craft production. These cultural interactions provide insight into the rich heritage surrounding the park.
