Kidepo Valley National Park, located in northeastern Uganda near the borders with South Sudan and Kenya, is one of Africa’s most remote and pristine wildlife sanctuaries. Covering approximately 1,442 square kilometers, it offers a unique blend of savannah plains, rugged mountains, and rich cultural heritage.
Narusu Valley
Narusu Valley is the primary wildlife viewing area in the park, especially during the dry season when it remains lush and green. The valley is home to a variety of animals, including elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalo, and several antelope species. The Narusu Dam and nearby waterholes serve as excellent spots for game viewing. The valley is also known for its tree-climbing lions, which can often be seen lounging in the branches of sausage trees.
Kidepo Valley & Kanangorok Hot Springs
Kidepo Valley, though arid, offers a unique landscape with its wide, sandy riverbeds lined with borassus palms. The Kanangorok Hot Springs, located 11 kilometres from the Kidepo River, are a fascinating geological feature where visitors can observe boiling water emerging from the earth. The area provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and is a peaceful spot for relaxation.
Mount Morungole
Mount Morungole rises to 2,750 meters and forms the southern boundary of the park. The mountain is home to the IK people, Uganda’s smallest ethnic group, who maintain a traditional lifestyle. Hiking to the summit offers stunning views of the surrounding plains and an opportunity to learn about the IK community’s unique culture.
Lomej Hills
Located near the park headquarters, the Lomej Hills are a great vantage point for spotting wildlife such as mountain reedbucks and various bird species. The hills offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and are a popular spot for nature walks.
Namamukweny Valley
Namamukweny Valley is known for its rich birdlife, including species like the Eastern Paradise Whydah, Green Wood Hoopoe, White-crested Turaco, Abyssinian Roller, and the Common Bulbul. The valley can be explored on foot or by vehicle, offering a serene environment for birdwatching and nature walks.
Wildlife Viewing
Kidepo Valley National Park boasts a diverse array of wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. The park is also home to over 475 bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Notable bird species include the Kori bustard, Abyssinian ground hornbill, and Karamoja Apalis.
